Holistic approach geared towards improving livestock health and production”

Training cum workshop program titled “Holistic approach geared towards improving livestock health and production”, is organized jointly by RLDC Gelephu and RLDC Zhemgang with effect from 27th May to 4th June 2009 with financial support from the EU Livestock Project under Department of Livestock. We have a total of 42 participants from 9 Dzongkhags (Bumthang, Trongsa, Zhemgang, Sarpang, Tsirang, Dagana, Wangdue, Punakha & Gasa)
The in-service training cum workshop for the field staffs of the mandate Dzongkhag has been an annual event ever since the establishment of Regional Veterinary Laboratory (RVL).
The annual training is mainly aimed to update/refresh the knowledge of our extension staffs on animal health/production and husbandry practices. It has always been seen as an opportunity to resolve issues hindering the livestock developments in the region. It is also a forum to impart to the field staffs the advanced technologies, skills, knowledge to improve livestock health and in turn enhance production and moreover to sensitize them about the new emerging diseases like H1N1 and Bird flu and even on Transboundary animal diseases like Rabies, FMD etc.
Now with the renaming of RVL as Regional Livestock Development Centre, we have additional mandates and larger area to cover. RLDC will act as the focal agency for facilitating planning, coordinating, monitoring and evaluation of the livestock development programmes in the region and also as a regional referral centre for Livestock Health, Production, Breeding, Feed and Fodder etc. Keeping in mind the broader mandates of RLDC, we have included topics on livestock production, breeding, feed and fodder besides livestock health.
For this training, we also did a small survey of the topics the field staffs felt important for inclusion in training. The response has been very good from the field staffs of mandate Dzongkhags and we have included their topics of choice in the present training.
The main objectives of this training cum workshop is that at the end of the training, the participants should be able to improve the overall quality of livestock health, production and extension services rendered in the field through holistic approach.
The training cum workshop will be quite informal and will be kind of different from the training which we used to have in the past. In this training we will mainly be using the participatory approach of learning (i.e. adult education) where in there will a lot of brainstorming session, group works, interactive sessions, plenary session etc. During the training programme, we will have quiz competitions and at the end evaluation of both the participants and Resource speakers.
For this training program as Resource Speakers, we have experienced professionals from different sectors under the Department of Livestock and also from allied agencies like RC-Jakar, ECR-ALP. In addition, we will also have Resource speaker from organization like Drug Regulatory Authority in the next few days.
