LIVESTOCK SECTOR.

Livestock Production and Development Information

1. Semi-commercial and small scale layer farms
• Total layer farms in the Dzongkhag – 238 nos
• Egg production weekly – over 8000 nos (over 35000 eggs monthly)
The surplus eggs are sold to schools (500 nos) weekly and hospital (300 nos) weekly. Some farmers even take their eggs for sale in Thimphu market. Poultry layer farmers are making good deal of additional income from the sale of fresh eggs in the markets.

2. Semi-commercial Broiler farms
• Total broiler farms in the Dzongkhag – 9 nos
• Bi-monthly chicken production over 5000 kgs
The surplus chicken meat i.e beyond the consumption of local market is being marketed in Thimphu under the coordination of Dzongkhag Livestock Sector.

Potentials in Poultry farming
• Poultry rearing is most integral part of farming system in Tsirang, so there is high potentials for setting up of commercial level poultry farms in future.
• Climatically Tsirang is very much suited for poultry rearing and disease incidences are very limited thereby increasing the profit margin
• Chances of coming up production farms (supply farms for pullets/broiler chicks)
• Fetches good prices when import of poultry products is controlled

Constrains/Bottle necks:
• Lack of quality feed supply source
• Cost of present feed is very high due to long distance transportation
• Avian flu out break has hampered the sustainability and further development of broiler farms.

Supports from Dzongkhag
• This Dzongkhag is being placed as priority area for development and production of small animals by the Department of Livestock
• Providing funding supports by seeking funding assistance from projects
• Full technical supports on rearing and management aspects
• Organizing farmers association to facilitate accessibility for credit sources
• Providing need based trainings
• Constant monitoring and guidance

3. Piggery Production
• Pig fattening (meat purpose) farms – 6 farms
• Breeding farms – 5 farms

The breeding farms were set up to meet the piglets demand from the public and to generate additional cash income to the farms.

4. Fish farming
• Total fish producing pond in the Dzongkhag : 154 ponds
• Annual fish production : over 15000 kgs of fresh fish

5. Fodder Nursery
• There are 4 actively producing nurseries. In 2005 alone the farmers earned over Nu. 60,000/- by sale of fodder seedlings. More than 5000 seedlings were taken to Trashigang during land reclamation campaign held by Ministry of Agriculture.
• It is expected to produce over 20,000 seedlings, which will be surplus to Dzongkhag demand.

6. Farmers’ Organizations:
• There are 14 farmers’ associations (Self-Help-Group) with fully set up organization
• Dzongkhag Broiler Association is formed to facilitate/look into broiler production and marketing aspects of chicken in the Dzongkhag
• The farmers’ organizations were purposefully set to take up livestock developmental activities through creation of micro-credit source by opening saving account in the name of group
• The farmers’ organizations have played an instrumental role in bringing tangible impacts in livestock programmes

Focus of Dzongkhag Livestock Sector:
The Dzongkhag Livestock Sector has brought considerable changes in the field of livestock husbandry and breed improvement, within short span of time. We would be looking forward and determined to strive ahead in keeping up the pace of livestock development. Most particularly, since Tsirang is given priority for small animal production, poultry and piggery production will be taken up as our main focus. The present scale of farms (Semi-commercial) will be upgraded to commercial level of production. Nonetheless, other livestock activities will be kept on top of the agenda.
